Are they in Tulu region or Malayalam region?

However, it's possible that some of the them are 'daivasthanam' and some other 'kshetram'. But in both cases, they have already been Sanskritised to certain extent.

The idea of 'reincarnation' is another clue to Sanskritisation. It's the stories that were spun to assimilate them to the caste system. Also, names of the Bhagavatis (Cheerumba -> chiru + amba -> Sri Amba? , Kurumba -> Kuru + Amba - goddess related to small pox?) appear to be Sanskritised (or Prakrit/Tadbhava equivalents). What you call as reincarnation of Mahakali is but one of the stories. There are too many stories. Probably, it differs from castes to castes too. As many of these Bhagavati temples were/are caste specific.

It's possible many of these Bhagavatis have non-idol spirit beginnings. The degree of Sanskritisation determined their idol form and while other spirits (including goddesses) remained in symbol form.

I idols of Bhagavatis have both serene and wrathful faces. I'm not sure if there is a daiva and deva differences behind those depictions.Manju Edangamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00474338169829802934noreply@blogger.com
